The Heavy Bus course prepares students for the RTA Driving Test, enabling them to get a Dubai Driving License Heavy Bus. Students completing this course and passing the RTA Driving Tests are licensed to drive passenger buses. Heavy Bus criteria- Capacity of bus is more than 26 passengers excluding the driver

This Course emphasizes passenger care and safety. The driver should ensure that all their passengers, especially children are seated properly or are holding the handrails and he should know what to do in an emergency such as fire or crash.

Course Details:

Registration:

  • Minimum age for registration is 21 years
  • Students are not required to possess an LMV driving license to register for a Heavy Bus license.
  • All Heavy Bus registrations are for a mandatory minimum of 20 hours plus 8 theory lectures.
  • Students who do not currently have an LMV driving license from their own country must be trained in the basic control of LMV (Curriculum subjects 1.07 − 1.12) off road before driving Heavy Bus
  • Students who have already failed the final RTA road test at another institute may register for a minimum of 4 hours

Heavy Bus Curriculum

The Heavy Bus curriculum has five stages which are summarized below

Stage 1 Subjects: - off road

  • Vehicle checks
  • Cockpit drill
  • Passenger safety and load security
  • Moving off and stopping safely and accurately
  • Steering and other basic control skills
  • Moving off on a slope
  • Wheel track difference

Stage 2 Subjects: - 40-60kmh roads/light to medium traffic

  • Rules of priority
  • Rules for systematic driving (MSPSL)
  • Effective observation
  • Hazard perception
  • Correct use of speed
  • Approaching and emerging from junctions
  • Meeting and crossing the path of other vehicles, judging vehicle dimensions
  • Dealing with roundabouts
  • Changing lanes
  • Dealing with gradients on public roads
  • Dealing with obstructions
  • Use of gears/making progress
  • Dealing with vulnerable road users
  • Dealing with pedestrian crossings

Stage 3 Subjects: - 60-80kmh roads/medium to heavy traffic

  • Planning and anticipation
  • Courtesy & consideration
  • Emerging (Two way streets)
  • Correct use of slip lanes
  • Dealing with traffic light controlled junctions
  • Appropriate speed and safety margins
  • Effective judgment of speed and distance
  • Changing lanes and overtaking slower vehicles
  • Making U turns
  • Dealing with complex roundabouts
  • Night driving

Stage 4 Subjects - off road

  • Confirming
  • Dealing with gradients
  • Offset reversing to left and right
  • Securing loads
  • Estimation of height

Stage 5 Subjects:

  • Yard Assessment
  • RTA Yard Test
  • On Road Assessment
  • RTA Road Test

Stage 1 (1.07 − 1.12) is carried out off road in a LMV if the student has no license before commencing training. Stage 4 is initially taught off road to build basic skills (dealing with gradients on-road is then taught in stage 2). Stage 4 can be taught either following completion of stage 1.

  • Age must be 21 years or over

For students who are Emiratis

  • Original Emirates ID card
  • Eye test report (Eye test can be completed at DDC Head Office / AL Qusais / Al khail / Dip 2)
  • Age must be 21 years or over

For Valid GCC license holders

  • Original Emirates ID card
  • Eye test report (It can be completed at DDC Head Office / Alqusais / Al khail / Dip 2)
  • Age must be 21 years or over

* In cases where the sponsor is the father a copy of the sponsor’s passport is required

For people with visas from other emirates

  • Original Emirates ID card
  • Trade License copy of Both Dubai and VISA Owned emirates is required (Trade license name should be same)
  • NOC Letter from the Dubai Branch (stating applicant working in Dubai branch)
  • Age must be 20 years or over

* In cases where the sponsor is the father a copy of the sponsor’s passport is required

How To

  • In case you do not hold a Dubai Visa, but have a valid visa from any other emirate, you can still register with DDC. You need to submit the following additional documents at the time of registration.

License Exchange

You may be eligible to transfer your existing driving license, without having to take a driving test, if you have a valid driving license from some countries. You must be a citizen of the country with current resident status in UAE. The countries whose citizens can transfer their driving licenses are given below

Registration:

  • Students do not currently have to possess an LMV driving license to register for Heavy Bus training
  • All Heavy Bus registrations are for a mandatory minimum of 20 hours plus 8 theory lectures (Go to lecture details)
  • Students who do not currently have an LMV driving license from their own country must be trained in the basic control of LMV (Curriculum subjects 1.07 − 1.12) off road before driving Heavy Bus

Medical requirements

Effective 12/05/2013 Heavy Truck drivers are required to do the following to obtain a driving license and permit:

  • Yard Test (manoeuvres/ internal assessment) and Initial Driving Assessment Test (internal)
  • RTA Yard Test
  • RTA Final Road Test
  • Minimum 1 hour night training
  • Attend for a medical fitness examination at an RTA approved medical centres
  • After passing the required tests and receiving the license obtain a commercial driving permit at a cost of AED110

Notes:

  • Those people who have a full, valid driving license from the recognised countries (See details) can directly transfer their license at any RTA Office on production of the necessary documentation and fee.
  • People who have a valid UAE driving license from any emirate other than Dubai must transfer their driving file to Dubai RTA before opening a file in Dubai for any other vehicle category.
  • People who have any traffic fine against their name will not be able to open a file without first clearing that fine.

All students who register for Heavy Bus Training Course must attend 8 mandatory lectures.
